UTAH TELEMEDICINE LAW
Utah is making strides towards telemedicine success! In 2015 the Utah Education and Telehealth Network was granted $2,000,000 in one-time funding, which will contribute to statewide telemedicine implementation. Utah is also having a big national impact as one of the first states to become a part of the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact.
However, there are some other aspects of Utah’s telemedicine policy that aren’t so great. For example, there’s no private insurance parity law in the state–and one hasn’t been proposed in over two years. Check back on this page regularly for updates!

Parity Law
Utah has no parity law for telemedicine in Utah, so reimbursement is not guaranteed through private payers–only through Medicaid.
Type of Telemedicine Covered
Utah’s Medicaid program covers medically necessary health services delivered via interactive video. There is also Medicaid reimbursement in the Telehealth Skilled Nurse Pilot Project for Patients in Rural Areas, for home health agencies and for some home monitoring patients.
Covered Health Services
UT Medicaid will cover physician and nurse practitioner services, including medication management, delivered via telemedicine. However, non-medical mental and behavioral health services will not be reimbursed.
Billing Codes
Don’t forget your GT modifier! Providers should use the GT modifier with the relevant code to note telemedicine.
Online Prescriptions
Utah has no regulations barring prescriptions following a telehealth visit. Just remember, prescriptions based off questionnaires without an exam are inadequate.
Interstate Telemedicine Licensing
Great news! Utah has enacted legislation that makes it a part of the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact. Read more about how this will improve interstate telemedicine services.
Restrictions on Locations
Rural Health Clinics may serve as an originating site, but not a distant site, for telehealth services.
Other Reimbursable Fees
Originating sites may not bill a facility or transmission fee.
